For Parents
The March Madness Reading Tournament starts March 1 and continues throughout the month of March.
EPMS is launching its Annual March Madness Reading Tournament to coincide with the NCAA Basketball tournament. This initiative’s objective is to encourage reading activity in both teachers and students inside as well as outside of the school building.
Question: How does it work?
Answer: The advising lesson plans for March will be a DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) school wide reading initiative. Each student & advisor/coach will document reading minutes with a reading log. Ask you child to see their log home reading time. The framework of the competition will recognize both advisement teams and individual readers throughout the tournament timetable.
Question: How can I help?
Answer: Beginning Monday, March 1st, your child will be logging reading time (in minutes) for both the time they spend reading during school hours as well as documenting their reading minutes outside of school. Your help is needed in encouraging & supporting your child in his/her reading activity as well as signing his/her log to verify the time spent. Your child’s advisement coach will enter all weekly reading minute totals by each Friday by 4:00pm. On Monday mornings, the team standings will be announced.
Question: Then what happens?
Answer: On Monday, March 22rd – the Elite 8 teams, as well as the Dream Team Individual Leaders will be announced and receive T-shirts to wear on Friday 3/26. ALL teams keep reading throughout the month of March. Monday, March 29th, the Final Four teams will be announced and the team points will be zero-ed out for those four teams. Friday, April 2rd there will be a TAIL GATE Party during 8th period for those final four teams & individual Dream team individual winners. At this time, the EPMS Team Champion will be announced as well as the EPMS M.V.R. Award (Most Valuable Reader).
Final Seconds –
Without planning to do so, often times when one’s child reaches middle school, many parents unwittingly deemphasize the importance of reading. Research is abundantly clear that reading and writing skills are dropping nationwide, while at the same time higher levels of these skills are necessary for future jobs. Consider –
- a family reading night or trip to your local library.
- Sharing a novel, short story and reading to your children. (They’re not too old for this!)
- Ask your child what they like to read and have a DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) time as a family.
- Visit the Elkins Pointe March Madness website for ideas on what to read. There you can also print copies of forms, view team and individual standings, etc.

PTA
One of PTA's purposes is to bring into closer relation the home and the school that parents and teachers may cooperate intelligently in the education of children and youth. Our student's families can help by helping Membership reach our goal of 100%. Reaching this goal demonstrates to us that we can support each other and accomplish great things for our students. In the coming months ahead look for programs and events that PTA and volunteers have been diligently working to put together to enrich the education of our students.
